- Michel Foucault can be seen without hesitation as one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century. Its importance stems, above all, from the effort to historicize the concept of the subject, which is considered to have an ahistorical character in contemporary Western philosophy. In many of his works, especially the book in your hand, the thinker raises provocative questions about the establishment of the subject as a philosophical category: How was what we call the subject established in the historical process? What discursive frameworks, what information/power mechanisms, what truth games surround this establishment process? What gigantic devices sustain the idea that we become free as we become individualized, that is, as we see ourselves as subjects of our actions? The History of Sexuality is the last work of Foucault, who ponders the history of mental illness, medicine and prison throughout his career. According to him, sexuality is not a natural instinct struggling for liberation under an oppressive power, but a device that is central to the functioning of a new form of power. This device undertakes indispensable functions in establishing ourselves as subjects; It repeatedly reminds us that our sex activity is the most natural, most basic, and therefore the most subjective dimension in us. According to this mechanism, if we want to know ourselves as a subject, we need to think about what is called sexuality, make it as understandable as possible, express discourse and ask it what we are. However, says Foucault, to the extent that we believe that the device in question reveals that unknown authentic self within us, it integrates with us, becomes invisible and escapes us. At this point, the groundbreaking feature of the work in your hand in all areas of social sciences, especially political philosophy, emerges: It is, first of all, a power problem that is put forward together with the problem of sexuality. However, in order to understand this problem correctly, to put aside the oppressive idea of power that the classical political thought in the West has accepted for centuries and to develop a brand new theory of power; It is necessary to emphasize creating oneself as an alternative to liberation and intensifying pleasure instead of liberating desire. This new form of power, which is inherently present in all relations, comes not from above but from below, not only destroys but also produces and brings with it new possibilities of resistance, finds its brightest expression in this text.
